Want to start an online business, but have no time?

You’ve heard stories of people who are making loads of money from the internet.  You think it’s great to start an online business, and you’re raring to try it out, but you have a slight problem.

What happens if you have a full-time job, a family, and also other commitments?

With all this baggage, are you honestly in a position to even think of starting an online business?

As much as you really yearn to be your own boss and live the life of luxury, your inner voice keeps telling you to forget these stupid ideas and get back to your 9 – 5 job.

You just have no time for it…

It feels like it’s just a dream that’s out of your reach.  You think that people like you, with limited resources, will never be good enough to reach success with such absurd ideas.  If not careful, you might even end up slightly depressed, and start to blame others for your lack of success in the online world.

There is hope for these people, and yes, even you, no matter how many hours you have at your disposal.

Well, luckily for you, it is very possible to succeed in such a venture.  It all boils down to how you manage your time effectively.

Starting an online business is indeed a tangible possibility, and if you put your mind to it, you will make it a reality.

How to get you going, even if you have no time for your website

Working time availability

This is perhaps not very practical, but it’s only till you get used to it.

You need to work around your regular work.

Now that might sound like a bit far-fetched, but it’s not as bad as you think.

And I’ll tell you how.

If you are the type to get to work early, perhaps to avoid the traffic, or you don’t like being late, then put that time to good use.

You can go to the canteen, if it is a suitable place, or you can perhaps find a location close-by, like a cozy coffee shop where you can just sit down, and write content for your website.

If you don’t enjoy putting pen to paper, you can always use your computer, mobile, or tablet.  Personally, I do prefer a notebook as I don’t type very fast on either my mobile or on a tablet.  So much so, that by the time I finish a sentence, I tend to forget what I’m on about.  With using a keyboard, life is so much easier for me as I can type quite fast, and as soon as a thought, an idea, enters my head, it’s soon down on the screen.

The same thing applies if you are just a student.  Whatever you are, for whatever reason you’re going someplace, going in a bit early means you’ll have time for yourself in which you can be productive.

Every minute counts when you are working on your online business

It’s not just the morning session you can use, but also your break period.  If you are lucky enough to have a long break, do something positive towards your website while eating.

Why not?

It certainly beats looking at the paper or the fly that keeps circling overhead.

You might ask, “But couldn’t I have stayed home to write, instead of having to write somewhere else?”

Yes, you easily can, but writing in a different environment to what you’re used to makes your creative juices flow better.  Also, being in very familiar surroundings, you can quite easily become distracted from what you’re doing, and end up not working on your website.

If you were to tot up these hours for a given week, you’ll be more than surprised to find out that these could amount to a whole day.

These pockets of time will help you tremendously, and it will do your business a great deal of good, apart from making you feel so much better at being productive.

Part-time can be better than full-time work when your website is concerned.

I’ll explain why I said that.

Don't wait for the perfect moment

OK, so you’re limited for time, and you are struggling to write, polish and publish your last post.

Apart from all that, you need to find suitable images, and sort out your website’s SEO.

You dread having so little time to yourself to dedicate to your online business, but then you dream of the day when you will be doing it on a full-time basis.  You wonder at how much more you can accomplish, and you want to hurry the process so you’ll move out from your temporary setup, into a full-time position.

However…

And pay heed to this…

You will find that when you do eventually go full time on your business, you’ll come to realize that you will have so much time ‘on your hands’ that you will become sort of, well, you tend to drag your feet.

You’ll think you have ample time to play your favorite game, so it won’t really matter because you’ll still have so many hours left to dedicate towards your online venture.

Then, you decide to pop over to Facebook to say hello to a few people and end up stuck there for hours upon hours.  The scary thing about FB is that time seems to go by so quickly, and before you know it, two, three or even four hours have gone by.

All those hours and nothing is done to your website.

Not good at all!

Part-time or full-time online business

So, in a nutshell, you will come to understand that being full time working on your business will not necessarily make you more productive.

In fact, it might have the opposite effect.

OK, fair enough, you will have more time to do things than when you were just doing it part time.

That’s granted, but that still won’t make you super efficient.

The reason behind this is that if you work part-time, and say you dedicate a full hour to your business, then it’s a full hour of solid work.

When you’re full time, that full hour might be spread over three hours as you’ll stop to have a smoke or to have a snack, or you need to go to the shops to get something.  You will wake up late as you don’t need to commute to work, and in the afternoon you’ll feel like you can have a little lie-down.  All this, excluding the time wasted on Social Media, and other distractions, don’t help your cause at all.

The bottom line is that even though you have loads of time to yourself in which to work on your site…

You don’t really do as much as you hoped to do.

Every day is a new opportunity to write more content

Writing content

Whatever you do, try not to waste a day without doing something constructive for your business.  By constructive, I don’t mean clean your desk (even if this is really something you do need to do occasionally).

  1. These days building a website don’t need that much time as 10 years ago. A lot of things is automated. Thanks to the tools provided in Wealthy Affiliate. I can push blog posts in half hour everyday now. So it does not take that much time. It is same as going to the gym. If one can commit to go to the gym, commit to build my website is the same too.

    • Of course, things have changed a great deal in ten years, but that still doesn’t make a day longer than 24 hours.  There are indeed many tools provided in Wealthy Affiliate which assist with writing content, but you mustn’t forget that doing your research takes its time, and so does writing good content.

You can easily write a great deal of content in a few minutes, anybody can, but would the end result reflect the quality you hope it would?

      Thanks for your comment, Kit.

  2. I’ve got friends who work a 9 to 5 job, that are always talking that they’ve got no time to do what I am doing, namely working on an online business.

They always have excuses like “I’m tired after work” or “I have to play with the kids” and so on…

I’m going to point them to your article, because you’ve some great arguments that I hope will get through their tick skulls!

    • Hi, Jurgen.

Yes, it can be tiring, especially if one is working a 9 to 5 job.  Believe me, it is not easy, but then again you have to look at it from this point of view.  Would you prefer to carry on working your 9 to 5 job and at the end of your working life you won’t have anything special to show for it?

The other option would be to start setting up your online business, in your own good time as nobody is chasing you in any way, and slowly you’ll be building on something which will render you an income, and a decent one (providing you do your bit and actually work for it).

You see where I’m getting at?

You might not want to leave your 9 – 5 job, which is fine, and in your spare time and using reserve energy levels, work on this project.  It will also be good as a form of income to supplement your full time income, and why not?

Your friends might see the light, but having said that, very few tend to look at the big picture which is really a shame.  Still, you can’t really force anybody to do something which they are not comfortable with, Jurgen.

Thank you for your comment, it’s great!

  3. It was really interesting to read about your views on quality content being the draw for making business with your site. I’m a new blogger but I am struggling slightly to fit everything in and become a little more streamlined in my workflow.

The help you’ve covered at the end of your article, Wealthy Affiliate, would they be able to teach me say a ‘template’ on how to get quality content up onto my site – will they be able to teach me how to write in a way that attracts more people to my blog?

I’m also looking for some advice on what tools to use to improve my overall look of my blog…

    • Hi, Chris.

Thank you for commenting, and yes, quality content is what makes or breaks a site.  I’m not new to blogging, or writing, but I too tend to struggle at times to fit everything and still have some time for myself to be able to ‘live’.

At Wealthy Affiliate there are tutorials and guides about how you should write a post.  There are templates where you enter your headline, then subheadings underneath which will be your paragraphs, then you’ll have your finish.

You can tailor made your own template if you so wish, and keep it for other posts, and this can be done within one of the many features offered, SiteContent..  SiteContent is a feature where you will also have your work edited, and can enjoy the choice of endless images to use for your work.

Regarding the quality of your content itself, writing is personal and although not everybody is brilliant at it, WA emphasizes that the more you write, the better you will become.  However, yes, there are tutorials, along with examples, to teach you how to go about writing in a certain way to attract people to your blog.

You have asked a couple of very pertinent questions, which will most probably take me a long while to answer in detail.  What I suggest is that you have a look inside the platform, and then you can decide what best suits your requirements.

Please don’t feel obliged in any way to become a paid up member as you don’t need to.  You can remain a free member for as long as you like, so you don’t need to feel like you’re committed.

  4. I think this post is very informative, and it’s what I was actually looking for.

I work, I have a family, and I have other commitments, so finding time to work on my blog was proving to be very difficult. Thanks to what you wrote, I can now try it out and see if it works.

    Thank you very much
